Employee problems

Employees, staff and managers, are what makes a successful business. The success of your business depends on loyal, hard-working employees, working efficiently and effectively to produce and sell goods and services to your customers.

However, sometimes, not all employees see it this way.

Employment Law

Employment law is an area that must be approached with care and attention to ensure that you have followed the correct procedures. Failure to do so may result in you being taken to an Industrial Tribunal for unfair dismissal. And losing.

Cohen and Black will work with your Human Resources department to ensure the investigation meets legal requirements and your employment contract requirements.

Types of investigations

There are three main area of investigation that we undertake:

  • Sickness
  • Field staff activities
  • Theft


Long-term sickness and regular short-term sickness can have a significant impact on your business. If you have concerns that the sickness may not be genuine Cohen and Black will undertake observations on the staff member to identify their activities during the period of absence.

The report, with video and photographic evidence, will provide the information for you to make an informed decision on the legitimacy of the absence, and for you to make a decision on any further action that may be required.

Field staff activities

Field staff have opportunity to take time off when they should be working, and to run a second business during the time they should be working for you.

If you have concerns that field staff are not working as required Cohen and Black will undertake observations on the field staff to identify where they visit and the duration of the calls.

The activity report, with video and photographic evidence, can then be compared with the call records the staff member submits to you. This provides you with the facts to make a decision on any further action that may be required.


Theft of goods can happen in many different ways. For example:

  • Goods received staff in collusion with delivery drivers signing for items not delivered.
  • Dispatch staff in collusion with delivery staff loading additional items not ordered.
  • Staff removing goods when they leave the premises.

There are many ways in which theft by staff can occur. Cohen and Black will discuss your concerns with you and recommend an appropriate investigation approach to fit the requirements.
